Compliance Basics Every Supplement Founder Should Master
Compliance is where founders either build trust or quietly accumulate risk. It rarely stops a launch — it stops a scale-up, an acquisition, or a retailer conversation, usually at the worst possible time. Getting the fundamentals right early is far cheaper than fixing them under pressure.
Manufacturing under current Good Manufacturing Practices is the non-negotiable baseline. Your co-packer's GMP status becomes your compliance posture, so treat their certification and audit history as part of your own. If your name is on the label, their process is your problem.
Testing is the proof behind your claims. Identity, potency, and contaminant testing — with retained documentation — is what turns 'we think it's clean' into 'here's the certificate of analysis.' Retailers, regulators, and eventually acquirers all ask for the same paper trail. Build it from batch one.
Labeling and claims are where good products get into trouble. Structure-function claims, allergen statements, and supplement facts panels each have rules that are easy to breach with well-meaning marketing copy. Have someone who knows the regulations review the label before it prints, not after a complaint.
